Amateur Radio, often referred to as “Ham Radio,” is a hobby enjoyed by many people around the world. The Lynchburg Amateur Radio Club, Inc. (LARC) is an ARRL Affiliated Club that was first formally organized in 1950 and incorporated in 1970. The Club has been in service to the Lynchburg Community ever since.
The Amateur Radio Operators of the Lynchburg, VA area are ready to serve our community with emergency communications at a moments notice.
LARC, Inc. also is available to assist in communications for special events in the area such as The Virginia 10 Miler Race, The Storming of Thunder Ridge Bike Ride and various other running and cycling events.
Emergency services provided by LARC are available to assist the police, EMS, rescue squads and hospitals with emergency communications. Remote sites at area hospitals, the Red Cross (in Lynchburg) and Emergency Operations Centers along with mobile and home operators can create scores of contact points in disaster situations.
ARRL Field Day is an annual operating event always held on the fourth full weekend in June over a 24 hour period to test operating skills and abilities of Amateur Radio Clubs and individuals to respond to disasters and emergencies. Field Day is the highlight of the year for many radio clubs and LARC is no exception. Planning for Field Day and executing the plan is a major undertaking for club members. There is usually an evening meal on Saturday night where many family members typically attend. During the actual operating hours of the event things get serious as members try to rack up contacts and points to score high in the rankings of the contest-like event. In recent years the event has been held at Izaak Walton League of Lynchburg which is a wonderful location for this event. Izaak Walton is located at 210 Izaak Walton Park Road Amherst, VA 24521.
